The Georgia arrived at the navy yard yesterday and news surfaced that its gunnery team broke the record on Tuesday. Despite disaster looming, the crew demonstrated nerve and skill to secure a remarkable victory.
James F. McDowell died after his bay horse King reared near Mrs Gardner's Brookline estate and threw him from a cart fracturing his skull. Separately the naval board probing the Georgia disaster will report gases from rapid gunfire caused the blast, not a spark from the turret hatch. A Post reporter visited the ship to speak with officers and men about the investigation.
Mr. McDowell longtime Brookline Riding Academy proprietor lived at 260 Newbury Boston. He was thrown under a light cart when his horse reared and bolted through Warren and Walnut streets. He died soon after at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Tales from the handling room detail acts of bravery as burning powder rains down and two bags of 52 pounds lie on the floor while crewmen seal magazines and man the guns. Officers aboard the Georgia arrive in Boston for inquiry, with Captain Seaton Schroeder presiding.
Fifteen hundred spectators at the Washington Sporting Club watched Fitzsimmons quit in the second round after Bob Johnson hurt his right arm. Johnson appeared unable to continue but fought on until Fitzsimmons toppled him, ending the bout with the referee stopping the action. George McIntosh, 75, of 24 Idaho street, died after overheating at home and falling downstairs. He collapsed at his residence and died en route to City Hospital during yesterday's extreme heat wave.

Notable entries include James Sullivan 37 of Tre mont street and Nora McDonough 17, plus Mary Joyce 77 of Medford street Charlestown and Michael Garvin of Dillon street Roxbury who was overcome while shovelling coal at Englewood avenue Brookline.
A severe heat wave sent the city to record levels with 71 degrees at 3 am and 81 humidity reading by midmorning. Victim George McIntosh, 76, collapsed at home on Idaho Street and died en route to City Hospital. Dozens were treated for heat stress across locations including Chelsea Street, Myrtle Street, and East Boston while police and ambulances assisted.
Washington notes forecast for Thursday and Friday for New England and eastern New York. Partly cloudy conditions with light to fresh southwest winds.
A Charlestown blaze prompted an explosion injuring three firefighters as crews battled the flames. Narrow escapes were reported as authorities investigated the cause and secured the scene.
Patrolman Albert pursued a touring car at near 60 miles per hour to Revere Beach. The occupants were captured on the beach. One prisoner was Elmer E. Smathers, turfman and millionaire owner of Major Delmar. Driver Augustus Bernadot and Smathers bailed. to appear in Chelsea court.
Patrolman Albert chased a speeding car near Chelsea and Revere, leaping onto the fleeing machine as dust flew and onlookers scattered. He overtook the vehicle, halted it, and arrested the occupants after the auto slowed.
Michael McCarthy aged 48 is charged with brutal beating of his wife and eight children at 29 Leon Street Roxbury. Police say his wife suffered a fractured jaw and serious injuries and is hospitalized in City Hospital in grave condition. An angry mob threw stones during the arrest and pursuit.
John D. O'Shea of Lynn Mass chairman of the Grand Lodge of Elks collapsed from heat prostration after attending yesterday's session and is in serious condition. A massed band parade with 40 bands and 1500 musicians marched along Broad street in Philadelphia ahead of tomorrow’s big parade featuring Boston lodge in Puritan costumes with bean pots as crowds filled the streets.
Brunswick, Me July 17 Either drowned near the Kennebec River mouth or blown to sea in a recent violent storm is the fate believed for Richard A. Lee of Brunswick and John Franklin Morrison of Medford Mass.
Both are prominent Bowdoin College students. Lee is the son of Professor Leslie Lee and is noted for his athletic prominence.
Morrison, vice president of the New England Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Bowdoin College track manager, and another Bowdoin official, both about 21, sailed from Mere Point in a 32 foot unnamed sloop bearing Casco Yacht Club flag. They planned to call Professor Lee in Brunswick on arrival but nothing has been heard. Fears grow as they were overdue and may have capsized or been blown to sea during a recent squall near Seguin and Boothbay Harbor.
Mrs John A Morrison mother of Franklin Morrison the Bowdoin College student who vanished spoke to the Post She said the last communication came July 9 via postal card from Mere Point noting they were about to sail Morrison a Medford High School graduate in 1904 lived at 101 Magoun Avenue with his parents.
A large explosion at the Raymond Skate Company building on Sherman Street Charlestown ignited a severe fire threatening nearby warehouses. Watchman Riley is missing, believed dead, and Chief Mullen ordered three alarms. Aid came from Somerville and Cambridge. Damage estimated at $100,000. Engine 32 collided with an elevated structure injuring three men. Police suspect the blaze was incendiary after three prior fires in the same building that week.
William Rundy and nine children fled from 9 Sherman Street in night clothes as fire raged through the Raymond Skate Company building on the second and third floors occupied by Pinkham and Smith. Fire alarms from Box 56 followed by a blaze seen for miles. Patrolman Montague rescued Driver McAuliffe while Frs Dougherty and Crowley aided at the scene. Injuries to firefighters were minor and Montague received praise for quick action.
District Attorney Moran has hired Grenville S. MacFarland to investigate the Dresser letter alleging payroll padding at New England Telephone & Telegraph Company. The probe will focus on phantom labor and related payments, with findings to be prepared for the grand jury. Prosecutions may follow if warranted.
Frederick A. Yeadon of 3 Prosper street was riding near Cross Street Salem Street when an air rifle bullet struck his head. Police detained Max Kurinsky of 714 Street for investigation.
