The Star promotes a season sale on and off the brands Laundered Negligee Skirts from Fisk Clark Flagg and Hutchinson Pierce and Co. Sizes range from 14 to 20 with reductions from 1.00 to 3.50. Aimed at a busy season clearance, customers are urged not to miss the sale.
In Chicago on July 17 a Grand Trunk passenger train struck a crowded Forty ninth street street car at a dangerous crossing. Four people died Charles Perkins John Dillion and two unidentified women. Injured include William Buhlman Mrs James Sanderson J C Smith Mrs Celia Mitchell Mrs S A Lace Mrs Vanderberg Frank Vanderberg and Jennie Blakeley. The car was hurled thirty feet after the collision as tracks gates were briefly considered clear.
The funeral for Mrs. Henry J. White and her son Alfred, victims of last Friday’s railroad wreck, was held at the Baptist Church with Rev. J. M. Hull and Rev. Amos Harris officiating. Pallbearers included Morse brothers and Daniels cousins. Interment was at Lynnfield Cemetery, Weston.
The Boston Board of Aldermen unanimously upheld the Mayor’s loan bill despite South Boston anger over district neglect. Alderman Flood criticized treatment of district improvements and urged tax rates if needed. An order allowed the treasurer to issue city bonds of 1000 each. Faneuil Hall use granted to the Union Veterans’ Union for Aug 16–18, 1893.
A July 17 report from San Jose states Lick Observatory photographic plates reveal a second comet enveloped in the tail of the first. The unseen companion appears to share the same or a parallel orbit and moves at the same speed, supporting the theory that a single force can eject multiple comets.
Charles P. Walker a produce dealer was sentenced to four years in the State Prison by Judge Fessenden in the Superior Criminal Court after pleading guilty to forgery with a related embezzlement count placed on file. The crimes involved forged signatures on notes totaling 5500 dollars and deceit connected to the United States Two Year Benefit Order. Witnesses included his wife and in laws. restitution was pursued through notes to the order's receiver. The forged instruments were issued between December 1892 and April last with hypothecated paper ending up with Traders' National Bank. Walker showed a blank, unmoved reaction at the verdict and was led away to the jail.
Miss Lizzie Byram aged 19 of Newark died at her summer home in Asbury Park New Jersey from hydrophobia contracted from a pet dog bite in early April. The wound bled little and was not cauterized. She fell ill late last month and died this morning in convulsions despite physicians efforts.
A morning paper report claiming a son of J Arthur Beebe was drowned in Buzzards Bay Saturday is false. The Cat capsized incident involved a son of the late Reverend Pepe, who did not lose his life.
Immense water flow hits pump No 10 at the Mollie Gibson mine in Aspen Colorado. Water has risen about fifty feet in the main shaft threatening to drown all pumps and flood the mine beyond recovery.
Switchmen in the Rio Grande yards at Pueblo walked off the job demanding the discharge of Yardmaster Crocker whom they accuse of tyranny. The men warn the entire line may walk out if their demand is not met.
Paris Green placed in the family coffee by a colored girl employed by Captain B. E. Reed. Three family members were poisoned. Porter Walbridge and Mrs. Reed are out of danger, but Captain Reed in critical condition. Incident occurred near Richmond Me on July 17.
Edward Cunningham denies killing William Baxter of Holden and provides an alibi. Baxter was found murdered near a cow pasture with a missing gold watch and a silver watch recovered. A search party, reports of a sighting at Chadwick square, and Connor’s testimony place Cunningham with Baxter before the crime, keeping the case unsolved.
In Nashua New Hampshire a family of Theophile Des Champs on Tolles street suffers suspected poisoning. A daughter died Saturday night, another died Sunday morning, another girl 18 is dying, and the mother is not expected to live. The family has vomiting and severe headaches with bodies showing black spots. Rice soup and bread with meat are their claimed foods. A post mortem is planned and police investigators met to discuss the case.
Thomas F. Kelly 45 of 44 Church street, in custody for drunkenness, fell down stairs at Police Station 5 last night. He struck his head and may die. Officers gave evasive accounts and delayed report while Dr. Fernald treated him. He was moved to City Hospital with a scalp wound and possible skull fracture.
Delegates from the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, Switchmen's Mutual Aid Association and Order of Railway Conductors met in Pittsburg to form a federation for mutual protection and aid. The Order of Railway Telegraphers will join at the next meeting, while the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers will not be included.
New Bedford July 17 John Trippe a farmer at Smith's Neck was accidentally hit in the temple with a pitch fork last Friday while he and E D Howland were stowing hay. He is not expected to recover.
A mutilated body with an axe and hairs from the victim was found near a lonely bush path. Baxter, who ran a road house, vanished after a drunken altercation and a raid on his liquor sales. Competing alibis by Cunningham and Downey prompt detectives to verify clues as two axes suggest a joint act.
