Mormon Emigrants to Utah Questioned at Castle Garden
Castle Garden greets more than fifteen hundred recent arrivals from Liverpool bound for Mormon Utah. About nine hundred are English and Scandinavian converts led by five elders. Most are rural workers with few city skills, and a girl named Anna Maria Gardner joins a young woman in the journey. Officials offer to shelter some in New York while others proceed to Utah, amid crowding interest and concern over the pilgrimage.
