In Clinton on July 15 a tense standoff surrounding Italian laborers at the Wachusett dam escalates as about 250 armed strikers surveil the area from woods above. Police guard 60 workers and deter an anticipated morning assault while workers labor under fear.
Rome reports that Pope Leo XIII shows no real chance of survival as doctors say death is imminent. His vitality persists only to ward off the inevitable, with officials predicting he will die within hours despite lingering strength and the pope’s earlier prediction.
Lewis Frederickson of East Boston was rescued from the wreck of the stolen 35-foot sloop Natalie off Provincetown after a northeast gale swamped it. He is 17, charged with larceny, and said to have repainted the boat three times while cruising off the Cape. The sloop valued at 350 and cargo worth 100 were recovered by the tug A W Chesterton.

Miss Anna Rosamond Barber of Chicago a Harvard summer school student has been missing from 6 Holyoke Street Cambridge since yesterday morning. She arrived with school instructors last week and has acted queerly the past few days police fear she may have harmed herself.
Matthew Malone 28 of 461 Hanover street lies dying after a vicious assault on Commercial street near Union wharf. He was robbed of 11 dollars and thrown into the street by three highwaymen. Three suspects, Alonzo Carey George Johnson and Joseph Silva, are in custody after a pistol exchange with Patrolmen Armstrong and Leonard.
