Enemy forces evacuate Jackson after dawn engagement

Jackson July 7 The enemy estimated at 4000 strong occupied the town until 4 PM then withdrew toward the Clinton road. Our forces held the flank and front and a severe fight lasted from daylight to 7 AM with nothing further reported since.

Rebel Prisoners and Bank Loan Talks Mark New York July News

New York reports no decision yet on a $50 million loan to be repaid in installments. Crescent brings 833 rebel prisoners from Point Lookout. Freight rates to rise 20 percent at a railroad convention. Ships depart from St John and Halifax. St Louis sails to Panama with 260 passengers and large treasure for England and New York.

Sultana Arrives with Vicksburg Reports July 9

Memphis dispatch notes Gen Slocum's expedition destroying the Pearl River bridge on the 5th and taking 30 prisoners. A cavalry force from Memphis on the 4th reached Vicksburg to reinforce Slocum. Rodney, Mississippi forces patrol the area with several skirmishes claimed victorious. No word yet from Gen Smith. Grapevine reports Forrest killed, but not credited.

Hundred Days Men Not Exempt From Draft in New York

It is understood here that the hundred days men do not count toward the state quota and will not be exempt from the draft. It is also not clear that militia volunteers are bound for any specific field duty.
