White, Alderman Matthew Surns, and three political allies were sentenced by Judge Schofield in Salem for conspiring to bribe Aldermen to remove Fire Chief Hamilton. The mayor will serve in Cell 13 until December 1910 unless impeached. The misdemanor carries a $1000 fine and does not bar future office. An effort to declare the mayor's office vacant may follow.
In Lawrence a mayor elected on a reform ticket two years ago and re elected last year faced a sweeping bribery conspiracy trial. Mayor William White and co defendants were found guilty of conspiring to confirm James A Hamilton as fire chief and later to remove him. White received three years in Essex County House of Correction and a $1000 fine. Several others were sentenced to prison terms. The jury returned its verdict after four hours.
