Box 63 in an outlying district went to Newburyport around noon after a woman doubted whether John Cashman’s old colonial mansion at Turkey Hill was on fire. Her doubt delayed the alarm about 30 minutes, during which the roof burned and $3000 in damage occurred. Continued on Page 3-Second Column
A 14 year old girl from Dorchester named Rose Pitonof completed a round trip swim from Pemberton to Peddock Island and back across Hull Gut despite a Nantasket steamer approaching. She finished at the Pemberton Hotel with cheers from bystanders as tide-turning currents challenged her.
In St Louis on July 13 the Red Sox swept a two game set with the Browns to split their western trip. A narrow first game win hinged on Lord and Speaker hitting late, while the second game featured Boston pulling away for the victory. The wins give Boston a pace on the Athletics and Tigers.
Sullivan and ex-Mayor Matthews announce a complete front change by the old Finance Commission advocating convention nominations. Sullivan called a disappointed politician by Shaw as he cites a $100000 campaign spend in the Fitzgerald Donovan Frothingham Dewey mayoralty contest. Matthews says the Democratic party is disintegrating while Republicans are weakening. Senator McCarren then backs convention nominations.
Senator Patrick H McCarren and ex-Congressman John A Sullivan with ex Mayor Nathan Matthews signaled a shift from prior stances on the new city charter. They now favor nominations by convention, aligning with recommendations discussed by Boston officials at the State House.
Cadets of the First Corps listened in shock as Colonel Leo Giacomo former military attache to the Italian embassy denounced the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia and the US Army. He accused the army of poor dress food and manners and claimed cadet hazing surpassed the water cure before the gathering sprang to confront him.
In White Plains on July 13 Harry Kendall Thaw rejected Evelyn Nesbit Thaw statements that he threatened her life upon release from Matteawan Asylum. He called the affidavit false and urged her to testify, insisting he is sane and has known her seven years.

William Andrews a Dorchester plumber died at the Relief Hospital after conditions of heat. John Cahoon of Shawmut Avenue died at City Hospital after collapsing at home. Philip Hyde died at Winchester police station from sun stroke. Drought persists in New England with no rain in sight as a hot wave and easterly winds continue in Boston for two days before light showers.
Six men scaled a 15 foot wall to force entry at the Huntington avenue institution housing about 600 women prisoners. A nun on duty raised the alarm and alert caused near panic among sisters and inmates. The attempted escape was detected before they could reach the main building.
A sister in a lookout tower spotted six men in dark clothes scale the wall and creep toward the main building of a convent near the Fenway. Police swept the grounds with officers and lanterns for two hours but found no one. authorities suspect a planned break in and possible release of a girl inside.
Governor John A. Johnson, in Minneapolis at the Aberdeen Hotel, is ill with a recurrence of appendicitis and intestinal trouble after three operations. All engagements for the week have been canceled.
In Medford the Mystic River claimed its third victim when 8-year-old Dan Creedon of 157 Sharon Street drowned in five feet of water after stepping into a hole while wading with friends. His companion, 9-year-old Joseph O'Leary of Monument Street, was pulled out unconscious and remained so for over five hours as doctors Gann and Campbell treated him.
Boston gains 6 to 5 and 7 to 13 wins over St. Lewis Browns in a twin bill. Detroit tops Washington 13 to 0, Cleveland blanks Philadelphia 1 to 0 in 10 innings, New York and Chicago split a doubleheader. Cubs beat Doves 3 to 2 and 4 to 2. St. Louis defeats Philadelphia 3 to 1. Pittsburgh 3 to 0 over Brooklyn. Ad Wolgast stops Britling Nelson in 10 rounds.
