Steamer Pioneer Drags Near Mile In Rough Bay

The Pioneer carrying about twenty four passengers bound for the State camp at Quonset Point dragged nearly a mile in lower bay water. Unable to land at the point she anchored in Conanicut lee. Miners Riot at Danville After Belgian Strikers Attack

In Danville on July 18 a clash erupted as 400 to 600 Belgian and other foreign strikers assaulted colored miners at the Pawnee mine. A colored miner used a bar of iron and a revolver to defend himself, several shots were fired wounding strikers. The crowd retreated to the woods and later attacked a Chicago & Eastern Illinois train, with gunfire exchanged inside coaches. Reports say one miner was killed.

Escape by Frederick A. Drew From South Boston House of Correction

A prisoner named Frederick A. Drew escaped from the South Boston House of Correction early this morning by scaling the fence near the gas works. Drew, 40, had been arrested March 6 by Inspector Cogan for larceny of silverware owned by a drummer. Police at Station 12 of City Point conducted the search, noting this is the seventh escape in two months.
