Miles Drives Indian Forces From Missouri River Front
Gen. Miles shifts his column to the north bank of the Missouri at old Fort Peck with 600 soldiers and 125 Crow attendants. Four companies of the 7th infantry are nearby above him. He has moved Yanktonians and Assiniboine Indians to the river’s south side near Mussel Shell river and aims to clear the area of hostile tribes. The Illinois Central Railroad reports it will bring three regiments to the Missouri. Forts Buford Keogh and Custer are largely deserted as Miles concentrates the garrisons with his force.
