The Vaderland the first of four new steamers for the International Navigation Company to operate New York Antwerp was launched at John Brown & Co Clydebank Glasgow. The ship is 560 feet long 60 feet beam 42 feet deep with about 12000 gross tons capacity for 942 first class 194 second class and about 1000 third class passengers. Twenty lifeboats including four collapsible ones are aboard.
Thirty five lodges of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts celebrated Orange Day with a field day and picnic at Walden. Members marched from Copely Square to Union Station then took a special train to Walden where Grand Lodge officers and James Ray spoke on politics, noting the organ’s endorsement of Republican candidates and signaling Democratic votes as favored.
A party of Cubans visiting Miss Longfellow’s house includes Miss P Liny and Miss C Adam from Havana hosted by pianist Miss Ollioguil who played Jota Aragonesa. The summer school reception at Hem enway gymnasium featured American and Cuban flags and a large Cuban teachers’ delegation planning concerts and charity events before returning to Cuba.
