Copper Range Company property and output overview
The Copper Range Company holds over 35,000 acres in Michigan's Lake Superior district including the Baltic Trimountain and a half interest in the Champion mine. It is the district’s second largest producer with high grade ore averaging 37.42 pounds per ton in 1920 and Champion output over 42 pounds per ton. The firm owns a controlling Copper Range Railroad valued at 7.5 million dollars with 100 miles of trackage and a 4000 ton mill, plus a majority stake in Michigan Smelting Company which operates a 90 million pound per year smelter. Despite wage cuts and lower coal prices it shows a small profit at 12 cent copper. As of December 31 1920 net quick assets were 5 437 488 dollars or 13.80 dollars per share, cash and Liberty bonds 2 522 971. The stock around 33 suggests market value near 7.5 million, roughly the railroad’s book value. Working capital since 1914 rose from 1 105 226 to 5 460 000 reinvested in property. With normal copper markets Copper Range could produce 38 million pounds yearly at under 10 cents per pound, yielding over 6 dollars per share in net earnings or 96 cents per share per cent profit.
