Body of Samuel Oakes Identified in Rhode Island
The washed ashore body at Middletown Rhode Island is confirmed as Samuel Oakes of Cambridge. Initial misidentification as John Patterson of Amesbury is corrected by clothes and a Cambridgeport dated letter. The case is suspected to be self-inflicted drowning after a May 19 trip on the Fall River steamer, with relatives sought since June. A January separation from his wife followed by her disappearance and a Frenchman’s vanishing are noted. The wife later ran a boardinghouse under an assumed name, while the Frenchman also resided there, actions thought to have distressed Oakes and contributed to his death.
