At 8:05 last evening a fire broke out on the second story of the four story brick building at 12 and 14 Portland street. The premises housed Henry Holmes as a carpet sweeper manufactory and W B Preston and Son scale makers. Holmes was slightly burned by the fire and Preston and Son were dampened by water. The building suffered about $400 in damage. The cause was spontaneous combustion.
