Boston officials and merchants urged removing a 10 foot Tremont street strip and 15 foot Boylston street strip from the Common to widen streets. They argued the plan relieves congestion and aids business while opponents warned against ending the five minute vehicle stop on the easterly Tremont side. The Board weighed keeping the stop against widening the street as a one way route from E Boylston to Scollay square.
