No Man-Eating Sharks North Of Cape Hatteras, Say Whalers
A Post reporter's interviews with six New England whaling captains place sharks as warm water predators that rarely venture north of Cape Hatteras. Captain Ellis, Mandly, and others dismiss reports of man-eating sharks near New Jersey and New England, noting only sand sharks in local waters and insisting the New Jersey attack was likely two sharks. They recount shark variety from man-eaters to blue-nosed and basking types and warn that harbor myths exaggerate danger while whales still attract sharks within reach of whalers.
