Five Hurt as Pole Falls on Dorchester Avenue

A rotten base caused a large pole carrying high voltage wires to topple at the corner of Dorchester Avenue and First Street South Boston injuring five people. Margaret Conroy suffered a broken leg and possible internal injuries while Annie Conroy, seven months old, was bruised but not seriously hurt. Frankie Holloran pushed a mother and child from the path before being buried under debris and treated on the scene. An estimated crowd of 150 witnessed the crash as police and ambulances cleared the street and traffic was halted for over an hour.

Trolley Collision At Washington And Northampton Streets

A misplaced switch caused a collision between two surface cars near Washington and Northampton streets just before 8 pm. Cambridge line Car 2427 suffered severe front-end damage while Car 2441 barreled into it, wrecking its front platform and wrecking seats. Patrolmen calmed frightened passengers. traffic delayed about an hour. a separate incident saw two pickpockets flee after Patrolman West intervened.

J. W. Sanborn Dies at 82 in Sanbornvill e

John W. Sanborn long time superintendent of the Northern division of the Boston and Maine Railroad died in SanborNVille New Hampshire at age 82 after illness from old age. He was a prominent NH political figure with wide New England connections. He leaves a widow and one daughter.

Two Stabbed in Fore River Shop Fight

In Fore River Shipbuilding yards two workers were seriously stabbed during a clash over machine access. Victims H. Johnson and John McAndrews were treated at the company hospital, while brothers Wade and John Shorter were arrested and set for court.

Oldfield Sets New Mile Record at Marion Track

Barney Oldfield today set a new world record by driving a mile on a half mile track in 1 16 2 5. The prior mark for a mile on a half mile track was 1 26 set by Winton. Oldfield completed five miles in 6 46 1 2. Tom Cooper could not race due to sickness.

Fire damage of 3000 at J D Jewett’s hardware on Devonshire street after a blaze on the third floor. A new engine and Bulfinch street engine narrowly avoided a collision near Washington and Court streets as they fought the fire. both engines stayed upright and arrived unharmed. Precautions will be taken to prevent a repeat incident.
