American Girl Wins 5000 Trotting Championship at Fleetwood Park

In front of about 15000 spectators, American Girl triumphed in three straight heats over Goldsmith Maid Lucy and Henry for a 5000 purse. Times were 2.21, 2.19 1-2, and 2.24. Goldsmith Maid was withdrawn after a quarter cut following heat two. American Girl led each heat by small margins in heat one, larger in heat two, and by one length in heat three. The Strikers.

Revenue cutter detains Cuban man-of-war near Newport

The revenue cutter Moccasin intercepted a vessel off Point Judith believed to be the Cuban brig Resolute later identified as the Pioneer. The armed craft, without papers and flying an unrecognized flag, was brought to Newport for orders. Officers say the crew includes Americans and others, with links to the Confederate navy, and claim to have acted as a decoy to lure Spanish ships from Cuba.

Cuban gunboat Pioneer reaches Newport after chase

An armed fore and aft schooner, docked off Narragansett Bay since Friday, was brought to Newport by the revenue cutter Moccasin. The vessel, the Cuban gunboat Pioneer, was found flying the Cuban flag. The Spanish Minister has telegraphed for a Spanish frigate from New York to monitor her.

Stein Monument Unveiled in Nassau in Grand Ceremony

In Nassau on July 9 the Stein monument was unveiled before the German Emperor Empress and Prince Frederick William with court and empire dignitaries present. George Bancroft the American minister addressed the crowd praising Stein for inspiring German unity and Germany’s rising world position. Explosion at Glasgow flour mill destroys building

An immense blast rocked a Glasgow flour mill today. Fire followed and the structure was razed. Eleven workers entombed in the ruins were burned to death while twelve were badly injured. The cause remains unknown.
