Two Edison feeders in a Washington street subway were cross circuited near School street at 7 10 pm causing explosions that ripped the subway top, sent flame and smoke high, and hurled debris. Firefighters battled the blaze for a half hour as water mains and surrounding property were threatened.
A collision between an elevated express and a local trolley at Coney Island caused a fire and a panic injuring six people. Mary Egallo Mary Lawless and William H Lawless of New York were among the severely hurt as passengers fled amid flames and crowd chaos after the express train failed to stop.
July 8 Hull. A. N. Hunt faces charges of obtaining money under false pretences after a search of his person uncovered victims including District Attorney John B. Moran and Senator William T. A. Fitzgerald. Hunt collected small sums from hotel operators and lawyers while posing as collecting for a home for the aged blind in Allston, which had been closed for over a year. He showed a letter said to be from the institution president and was arrested by Officer William C. Bacon.
Fort Worth dispatch reports Col Bill Greene’s camp at Cana Nea Mexico was transformed into a military stronghold. Fourteen thousand Mexican rurales will be quartered there, ordered by Sonora’s military governor as a precaution after labor riots last month.
After a running duel with two officers from Station 5 just after 1 30 this morning Andrew J Fitzgerald 18 of Hamburg Street was captured at pistol point and locked up Officers fired eight shots while Fitzgerald fired five none hit Anyone wounded was avoided as they chased him from Louis Teprucelli bootblacking shop at 1502 Washington Street where authorities say he stole cigars two revolvers and other items He drew a revolver and fired back before being brought to bay.
Eva Beard Tracey, 26, wife of Edward Tracey of Glen Farm, is jailed in Cowansville on murder charges after Forest Howard died from a gunshot at her home. The coroner’s jury ruled self defense, but Howard’s brother pursued charges after reviewing the case. Tracey says she acted to protect herself during an assault while her husband was away.
An uninvited guest at a christening in North End home of Pietro Genze attacked guests during a party. He injured Johanna Genge mother of the infant nearly to death and cut four others before escaping as a mob closed in. Police search continues for the unknown assailant.
John Schidlofski was electrocuted at Charlestown State Prison at 12 18 AM for the murder of his wife Marciana on Belmont golf links July 12 1905. He was weak and assisted to the chair by Rev Robert Walker and a guard. Only one application of current was needed and he moaned softly.
A pleasant Sunday with a gray sky turning sunny as clouds part and the storm king is kept at bay. Children play among elders, the mood is grave yet gay.
In the National League Chicago fell to Pittsburgh and St. Louis lost to Cincinnati. Fog slowed the Eastern Yacht Club fleet as four boats finished the Saco River race before darkness. Manager Collins urged scouting in outlaw territory for next year. Attendance at Huntington Avenue trails by about 900 per game versus when Collins teams were winning.
