Shoe manufacturers, tanners, supply men and machinery makers from various lands have assembled in Boston for the seventh National Shoe and Leather Market Fair opening today in Mechanics' Building. They meet rivals to form a kinship in trade and industry.
The market fair opens at 2 p m with Mayor Curley delivering an address. Over the next eight days at least ten shoe and leather groups will hold meetings in the Mechanics' building. Exhibits include latest shoe styles and Eastern hall machinery displays by United Shoe Machinery Co. Notable attendees include National Shoe Retailers Association leaders, English firms like A G Moxley and C G Gibbson, and exhibitor Miss Kati Hey from Frankfurt.
The National Leather and Shoe Finders' Association opened its 10th annual convention in New York with 40 delegates in attendance. General Theodore A. Bingham delivered the welcome address for the city. The leather men's banquet is set for Thursday and the convention concludes Friday.
Coroner Phelan holds John B. Curtiss of Stamford responsible for the death of Cecil Clark of Littleton New Hampshire. Clark was repairing a stalled engine on a trip to New York when Curtiss in another car struck him, crushing him and causing burns as both vehicles caught fire.
The French submarine Calypso was sunk today by the destroyer Mosqueton during maneuvers. The crew were saved but salvage is deemed unlikely due to the great depth at which she lies.
A collision between an east bound freight train and a hand car near Grove Beach station halted Shore Line service in Clinton Connecticut. The freight engine derailed and overturned, three coal cars and a box car were damaged, two more coal cars overturned. no injuries reported. West bound track cleared. impacts on east bound line expected overnight for repairs. Local trains ferried passengers. expresses detoured via Saybrook Middletown line.
A man named Gillis from New Haven was rescued off Branford after riding a small rowboat all night on Long Island Sound. He said companion Johnson drowned when washed overboard during the storm. The rescue was effected by the tug Fred Richards and Gillis was landed in New London.
The Duke of Connaught Governor General of Canada arrived at Newfoundland aboard the Essex for a colony tour. He will be formally welcomed by Governor Davidson, land for a reception, and participate in official duties during the visit.

The entire suspended Yaryan Naval Stores Company plant in Brunswick Georgia was sold today to the Imperial Investment Company for $425000 under a U S District Court order by Judge Sheppard. There was no bidding competition.
Missouri Illinois and Idaho with naval cadets from the Annapolis academy arrived here today from Italy. The warships were ordered to stop and wait for orders expected to arrive tonight as they move toward England.
The Boston and Maine frog shop in Nashua has been closed by the railroad after two generations of operation and 200 employees. Workers will transfer to Keene, New Hampshire, where the company will provide new jobs.
In Meriden Connecticut Philip J Handel 48 head of the P J Handel Company lamp shade maker shot himself in the garage attached to the plant. A note was left and the medical examiner cited temporary mental depression though associates said he was in good health and planned a Montana trip with Mrs Handel to visit a brother next Monday.
Louise E Wright a 16 year old Neponset girl who eloped to New York with Percy H Vreeland was placed on probation until November 1. She appeared before Judge Churchill on a charge of being a stubborn child. Vreeland arrested in Patterson New Jersey will be arraigned tomorrow on abduction charges. The police plan to call the girl to testify.
The court of general sessions affirmed Upton Sinclair's April conviction for disorderly conduct after he publicly rebuked John D. Rockefeller over the Colorado strike. He chose three days in the Tombs over a $5 fine, began a hunger strike, served two days, and his wife later paid the remaining fine.
Fire at the Thorndike Hotel in Rockland forces 75 guests to evacuate after a night clerk, Edgar V. Pinkham, wakes to smoke from a basement store. Investigators treat the blaze as possibly incendiary with routine reports to follow.
