New York delegates debate fair solution to arbitration with England. Mr Whitney hopeful for best outcome. Hill fails as temporary chairman 349 to 556. Senator Daniel defeated. Silver faction dominates. Senator White of California selected permanent chairman.
The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company arrived amid a cordial reception in Liverpool and a massive crowd in London. Officials, military figures, and the Lord Mayor greeted them with salutes, toasts to the Queen and the United States, and declarations of friendship and peace.
Whitney urges the sound money group to nominate a cautious government candidate after speeches in Chicago at the Auditorium Hotel. The gathering featured fiery rhetoric as members debated the path for a GOV nominee.
A late night meeting of over 30 gold men chaired by Senator Gray of Delaware adopted a resolution to appoint state delegates to assess a possible independent gold Democrat organization. Speakers including William Whitney and Frederick Coudert debated strategy as Southern Democrats praised the plan, and a push toward a gold backed presidential nominee emerged. The session ended near midnight.
In Chicago the resolutions committee chose Senator Stephen M. White as chairman and then named Senator J K Jones to head a nine member sub committee to draft a platform with the exception of the financial plank which would be handled by the full committee. McDermott warned he might bolt if the panel crafts the finance plank, while White defended constitutional money standards and the risk of a new convention repudiation.
The An of Boston from Liverpool arrived in London at 8 45 pm to a spontaneous outburst of enthusiasm. Crowds blocked streets around Euston Station as the American artillery company were seen from car roofs and cheered while the London Honourable Artillery Company band played Yankee Doodle.
The coach party of Americans arrived in London amid a sea of cheering crowds. Omnibuses carried them to the Armory while ladies waved shawls from windows. A banquet at the London company armory awaits followed by visits to Henley and Woolwich.
The Grand Banquet in London occurred at the armory quarters of the London company. Approximately four hundred attendees participated as Denbigh and Desmond led the event with the Honourable Artillery Company’s lieutenant colonel presiding.

In Chicago the first convention vote saw free silver prevail as J W Daniel defeated Hill 566 to 349 with Hill abstaining. The night featured canvassing for today’s engagements as party leaders debate platform aims on free coinage two thirds rule and potential immigration and Cuban planks.
The convention moved to delay final action to permit a compromise. The silver faction, led by Bland supporters, aims to push through the financial plank with the 16 to 1 ratio and resist international action delays. Altgeld and Russell claim silver majority strength and urge persistence toward victory.
