In Baltimore on July 7 an attachment against the property of A L Mellen, who fled in November amid a murder conspiracy charge involving his daughter in law, was tried in Common Pleas Court. A draft for 1219 dollars on a New York house, drawn in Monterey Mexico, was protested and the attachment laid after testimony showed the draft was extorted under fear of exposure. The attachment was quashed and an appeal noted. Mellen is reportedly in Canada.
Joseph Panill of Middletown is missing after his clothes were found on his sailboat offshore. A drowning theory is investigated as his boat remains. In Bridgeport, Thomas Hayes, 17, shot Lt Durant in the thigh and is held at Meriden reform school. Spot Pond water levels drop over twenty inches causing water shortages for Belmont and Baker's Hills residents.

President nominates A. A. Upton for postmaster at West Gardner following strong backing from business leaders and non partisans. Upton is a young Democrat with broad local support and the appointment reflects his endorsements.
Washington July 7 special report says the Senate chamber grew so hot during an executive session that the business was abandoned and doors opened. Senator Hoar was not present and several senators were nearly overcome by the heat.
Washington reports that General Colins family has gone to Boston. Representative Whiting will be in his seat tomorrow. Representative Boyle states he does not expect to run for Governor of Pennsylvania.
Washington reports Mr Morrison links adjournment to Mr Randall calling his tariff bill. Randall says he is not responsible for the bill and that the Ways and Means Committee will act. Edmunds warns adjournment may slip to about August 1 rather than July 30.

Caicaco July 7 Hearing opened in a suit by William M. Jones of Des Moines against John B. Alley of Boston and the Des Moines & Minneapolis Railroad Company. Jones alleges Alley bought and sold 406 bonds at 76 cents on the dollar, pocketing a large gain while the road’s stockholders seek proceeds for the company. Alley contends bonds could not fetch more than 76 cents and that the sale aided the road, allegedly leaving the bonds at about 90 cents in effect.
Concord July 7 The Democratic State committee met to elect officers and organize the campaign but adjourned for two weeks without action as Governor nominee Col Cogswell was ill. The Republican committee is slated to meet July 28 to set conventions. Col Sawyer of Dover says he would accept if party favors it. Prohibitionists call for a state convention to be held in Concord by the 14th.
Abington July 7 The annual meeting of Abington Savings Bank reports no impact from the Abington National Bank trouble. Deposits of about 29000 stood at the Bank of Mutual Redemption of Boston and other funds. Withdrawals occurred but deposits were restored as solvency was guaranteed. Richmond J. Lane is at Saccarappa investigating with counsel. Friends of Lane are said to aim to purchase the leather board business at Saccarappa to shield the bank from loss.
The French sloop of war Talisman from the North Atlantic squadron arrived off Boston Light around 11 a.m. forenoon, towed by a tug, anchored near the navy yard by 1 p.m. after a salute and a station commandant visit. The wooden bark-rigged steamer, about 1000 tons, carries six guns and a crew of roughly 150 under Commander Penaud.

The Boston steamer Merrimac ran aground on Rifleman's rock near Point Prim while returning from Charlottetown to Boston with about 100 passengers aboard. Struck during a stormy night, she floated off at low water, sustained no damage, and reached Charlottetown by mid afternoon with no external assistance.
New Bedford Yacht Club held its first regatta of the season open to out of town craft.
