The popular Friday night band concerts return with Boston Cadet Band leading off on July 9. A 21 piece ensemble conducted by J Thomas Baldwin performs from 7:30 to 9:30 atop a band stand on the second floor, drawing crowds who can hear well beyond the building. Programs are available at the bundle counter.
Two heat deaths reported in Boston as temperatures climbed. William Handy, a Charlestown Navy Yard employee, suffered heart failure after returning to work. his widow and son survive. William Gray, a 60 year old stater at Revere Beach State reservation, died while at work on the administration building. Thousands sought relief at beaches. parks filled with women and children as sweltering heat persisted in North and West Ends.
Eugene Ferris six year old son of Mr and Mrs Merris Ferris of 337 Harrison avenue was struck and seriously injured by an electric car last evening at the corner of Compton and Washington streets. His father Morris Ferris works for Contractors Jones and Meehan.
Patrick Hurley, a sailor aboard Starling, was attacked near the Warren draw in Charlestown when two assailants attempted to throw him into the river. Colonel John H. Cunningham of Chelsea halted a passing Washington avenue car and led a group of passengers to intervene, saving Hurley before the culprits escaped. Hurley, shaken and dazed, was taken to his vessel and later to Charlestown police for questioning. authorities plan to pursue the attackers.
Pittsburg dispatch reports 375 000 miners and 220 000 iron and steel workers joined a widespread walkout, potentially affecting 3 000 000 people including families and vendors. Sixty two railroad mines idle. thirty eight remain operating with many plants unclear. Lists of idle and active mines across multiple counties and towns are provided.
Washington reports a Wednesday forecast for New England of generally fair weather with light coastal showers Wednesday afternoon and southeasterly winds. In the Boston vicinity the forecast calls for fair weather and variable winds.
A heat wave overwhelmed workers from Franklin Park to Charlestown Navy Yard, with seventy foot fall injuries and numerous hospital cases. Hospitals reported many heat prostrations among William Hunt, Theresa Booth, John Joyce, Peter Quinn, Henry Brown, John Moran, H. E. Willard, and Charles Dexter, plus others treated with varying severities. Doctors Galvin and Rockafellow led emergency care as crews transported victims home.
A workman’s son, while delivering a milk drink to his father near Compton and Washington, was struck from behind by car No 1736 of the East Boston and Chelsea division. He was knocked unconscious, carried home, and found to have serious internal injuries along with head and leg bruises.
Providence Rhode Island July 6 Eugene Morin a 12 year old mill worker at Albion Company's Valley Falls plant was struck by the Lonsdale passenger train. His left leg was cut off below the knee and his right leg crushed at the thigh. An orphan from Canada he has no relatives in the area. He was walking the track to avoid a freight train stopped before the passenger engine and is not expected to survive.
At 10 30 last night Officer of Station 3 arrested James Courtney of 2 South Russell Street for intoxication in Bowdoin square. Courtney fell on the sidewalk en route to the box and broke his right ankle. He was taken to City Hospital.
Captain O'Brien and four detectives arrested a man believed to be Martin Thorn at Spear's drug store on One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Street and Eighth Avenue. A man in black matching Thorn's description was observed in Eighth Avenue and handcuffed after a brief exchange. Clerk Maurice O'Farrell and barber Maustig identified or declined to discuss details.
Post reporters hunted for the indicted contractors and wharfinger amid rumors of fugitives. Kimball Mulrey and Nawn were absent as trials were postponed. Gleason refused to leave town.
