Confusion in Roxbury Fire Dept over Weston Street blaze

District Chief Grady defends handling of the July 3 tenement fire at 54 Weston Street. Fire officials say Engine 23 briefly returned to the blaze after being sent home, amid accusations from outsiders and a Herald report. Fire Marshal Whitcomb’s team found the fire started in a second floor closet due to rats and matches, with flames spreading through an open attic space. The district chief asserts proper orders and criticizes the Herald for misstatements while residents praise the firemen’s work.
