A city sale advertises many leading suit styles in English Austrian and Irish fabrics plus American makes, originally priced at 20 22 and 25, now offered for 12 and 15. The notice promotes walking suits in sacks frocks and other styles for young and middle aged men for travel business or fall use.
Baltimore convention outlines the Democratic platform and ratifies Cleveland and Thurman nomination. John Winans chosen permanent chairman as delegates from 496 clubs and from organizations pledge support, with a plan for a National Association of Democratic Clubs and a call for Home Rule in Ireland.
New York July 5 The Times reports Judge Andrews set in motion a plan by nearly 6500000 in Troy and Boston mortgage bonds to sue the Fitchburg Railroad for overdue interest. Attorneys Masten Nichols enable suits in multiple counties to collect interest from Jan 1 1887 onward, with many big firms among the bondholders. If successful, hundreds of suits across the state will raise costs for Fitchburg.
A July afternoon hail storm shattered the city with 45 mph winds and 13 minute cloud burst. One inch of rain fell, a 24 degree temperature drop occurred, and hail up to three quarters of an inch damaged a bathhouse, wrecked Irwin Bros circus tent, injured several people, and endangered riverboats. Telegraph and mail lines suffered extensive damage before repairs began.
Maine Democrats opened a mass campaign in Portland with 1500 delegates and 8000 attendees at City Hall. William L. Putnam spoke on tariff policy, challenging Republican free trade and praising American labor, amid cheers for Cleveland and Thurman. Multiple speakers reinforced the fight for protective tariffs and Maine political unity.
In London today the Nationalist MPs led by Mr Parnell adopted resolutions thanking the New York Legislature for endorsing the Irish cause by welcoming Sir Thomas Esmonde. They state that as Ireland lacks self government, they will rely on the Empire State Legislature's goodwill to regain rights. A devastating cyclone struck Mason City Iowa July 6 sweeping across about a hundred miles in length and nearly a mile wide. Ruthven saw funnel clouds dipping four times destroying structures. Emmetsburg lost the Catholic Church a railroad depot and homes. Calendar and Whittemore reported ruined buildings and barns. Meservey and surrounding farms suffered extensive damage.

In London at the American Club a brilliant July Fourth banquet was held with Sir Edward Thornton presiding. Guests included Lothrop US minister to Russia Windom Phelps Waller and Story. White of the legation responded to a toast to Minister Phelps who was absent with speeches by Waller Windom and Lothrop.

In Bancor Maine a man named Kinney from Prince Edward Island was found dead with a rifle shot through the head in a bushes clump near Elliotsville. A neighborhood youth, deemed unstable by many, is under suspicion. Coroner Poole and County Attorney Parsons traveled from Dover to investigate.
