Springfield Massachusetts July 5 The fortieth anniversary of Rev E P Blodgett settlement as Greenwich Congregational church pastor was celebrated with broad local participation and visitors from surrounding towns The historical sermon accompanied a village common meal and afternoon addresses By contrast Rev Edward Dawse of Sherborn has served longer in the state and only four ordaining council members along with two original church members remain Blodgett preached 2442 times at his own pulpit and 913 elsewhere totaling 3355 services There were 546 deaths in town during the period reflecting past population growth and Blodgett's attendance at most funerals
Boston reports that Solomon Carter produced the stub of a check book referenced in his letter to the president. The Dec 21 1868 check for 3500 was paid to a Whitman, who could not be found. Horton’s explanation to Collector Slack is not disclosed and the official report awaits Commissioner Evans’s return.
In Sulphur Springs Colorado on July 5 four Grand county officials including two commissioners and the county clerk were shot by masked men. Barney Day and Mr Mills died instantly while E P Webber and D J Dean were mortally wounded. Governor urged to send state militia as cause remains unknown.
In Chicago on July 5 Mary Smith an assisted Irish emigrant appeared in county court described as violently insane and incoherent. She arrived in the city only since Sunday has no money or acquaintances in America and recently came from Clare Morris County Mayo. She is seven years old.
The Berks county board dismissed Jared Bickel, superintendent of the Berks County Insane Asylum, after an inquiry into charges including ill treatment of inmates. One case described an inmate beaten until black and blue.

Patrolmen Rankin of division 2 and Dudley and Sheehan of division 4 arrested Joseph Tyler alias John Taylor and Charles Connell alias Charles Connor at 12 10 this morning for attempting to rob William T Wilson on Purchase Street. Rankin led the pursuit toward the New York and New England depot. Wilson was knocked down and his watch was seen hanging from his pocket. He claims to have lost $18, but no money was found on the prisoners, likely discarded during the chase.
Judgment awarded against the Montreal Portland and Boston railway company for bonds issued in 1874. J R Derosier receives $6,840 and the barque de Hochelaga $1,270, reflected in the Montreal case dated July 5.

The blast damaged the house with plaster torn doors torn from hinges and a large door split. Firemen of hook and ladder company No 4 aided in the emergency.

The first civil service exam in Burlington had seven candidates under Dorman B Eaton.
