Justice Melville W. Fuller, head of the U S Supreme Court, died in Sorrento Maine at age 77 from heart failure. He fulfilled a wish to end his life in the room where his wife died six years earlier, in his native Maine.
Justice Fuller died suddenly in his summer home in Sorrento after no prior illness. His daughter Mrs. Francis and granddaughter Miss Aubrey Francis were at his side, with neighbor Rev. James E. Freeman of Minneapolis summoned for a physician. Fuller had been a Summer resident for 17 years, arriving from Chicago on June 25 and staying at the Mainstay.
A head on collision near Middletown Ohio between the Big Four passenger train and a Cincinnati Hamilton and Dayton freight train killed 19 and injured many more. The southbound LImited, detoured from a Sharon wreck, crashed after a misread order left pilot Engineer George Ward with less than five minutes to Middletown.
Washington reports forecast for New England calling for fair skies Tuesday and Wednesday, continued cool conditions and moderate winds from the north.

In Cincinnati on July 4 a deadly race riot followed a fight leaving one Black man dead and several others injured. Numerous whites also suffered injuries as clashes spread through the area. Authorities reported chaotic scenes with confrontations across multiple streets and venues.
ATLANTA Ga July 4 Johnson's victory sparked general rioting in the negro quarters tonight. Several people were injured as black residents were chased through the streets by an angry white population, with disturbances continuing late into the evening.
Little Rock Ark July 4 Two Negroes are reported killed by white men one by a Rock Islander arriving in the city tonight and the other by a man at Second and Scott streets.
In Pittsburg on July 4, less than half an hour after the Jeffries Johnson decision, three riot calls were sent to two police precincts in the Negro Hill district. Streetcars were held up by Black residents as insults were hurled at passengers.
Multiple small race riots erupted along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington on July 4 after the Jeffries Johnson bout result. Numerous arrests reported, no serious injuries.
Baltimore on July 4 reports police arresting seventy people in the city’s black belt for disorderly celebration of Johnson's victory. One man was badly cut in a clash and two others were assaulted by whites in disputes over the big fight.
News that Johnson defeated Jeffries in Reno triggers immediate turmoil in Manhattan. Within hours, 17 ambulance calls erupt across many districts as police doubles patrols to quell unrest. Four Negroes and eight whites are arrested. four Negroes hospitalized amid the chaotic reaction.
In a brutal fifteenth round Johnson lands decisive blows on Jeffries causing two knockdowns. Jeffries struggles to rise, blood streaming, as the crowd urges surrender. Referee counts as Johnson dominates, Sam Berger enters the ring and ends the fight with Jeffries unable to recover.
Reporter Jack London describes Johnson as dominant in a staged clash near Reno on July 4. Johnson uses wit and repartee from start to finish, smiling and unshaken, while Jeffries and Burns compare in lesser showings. The piece notes the fight’s historic setting and significance.
