Grim safety failures on the Norge disaster are blamed for the high loss of life. Poor life preservers, jammed lifeboat lowering gear, and lack of crew discipline fueled a fatal panic as passengers fought for boats and perished both aboard and after evacuation.
Thirty two survivors of the Danish steamer Norge landed at Stornoway aboard the Cervona after the ship struck a sunken rock south of Rockall. Captain Gundel described the moment of collision, the crew's brave actions, and his escape in lifeboat No. 1 with Second Engineer Brunn. Lifeboat provisions were scarce, and the pair aimed for St Kilda, 150 miles away, before rescue on Sunday.
A canoe carrying Harold Currier and Frank Menter overturned by a steamer wake on Lake Massabesic in Manchester New Hampshire results in both youths drowning. The two 20 and 18 year old men are reported drowned with their bodies not yet recovered.
A crowd exceeding 100000 watched a Boston Common fireworks display last evening. From Beacon Street to the ball field the Common was packed as the city showcased a display lasting over an hour. A prominent piece read Welcome, G. A. Re.

Sydney N S July 4 Civil authorities could not quell a mob of about 1000 strikers at the Dominion Iron and Steel Company entrance. Military, with fixed bayonets, guarded plant entrances amid fears of bloodshed as workers attempted to reach the works. F P Jones and other officials were attacked before soldiers intervened, riot conditions spreading through the city streets as strikers roamed unrestrained.

John Goodwin of 8 Vincent Street Cambridgeport died in Relief Hospital from a fractured skull. He was found in the street by a Station 1 officer about 10 o clock Saturday night and taken to the hospital. Police and hospital records lack details. Medical Examiner Stedman will investigate today.
Judge Edward C. Bates of Westboro, arrested Friday on larceny charges, was bailed from the Charles street jail yesterday morning in time to celebrate the Fourth. Mrs. Bates helped secure Worcester and Westboro parties to stand as guarantors for her husband. Bail set at $10,000 by Bail Commissioner Farley.
A naval clash was reported off the Liao-yang coast with Russian torpedo boats engaging Japanese transports in heavy cannonading observed from a hilltop. An officer described vessels exchanging fire in the afternoon.
Tientsin July 5 reports that on June 27 Japanese main squadron began landing men at Lay in preparation for a final assault on Port Arthur. Land operations around Port Arthur are expected to bring the matter to a final decision within the next day.
Evelyn Bliss aged 14 and Nellie Kane aged 16 drowned in the Merrimac River at Lawrence while canoeing near falls this afternoon. Seymour Leighton, a 38 year old call-man and machinist, also drowned trying to recover the bodies. Weather showed heat and thunderstorms. a thunderstorm warning and a medicinal ad appear in the report.
Wakefield July 4. A large touring car with four occupants two men and two women veered to avoid a bicyclist and plunged into the Saugus River. Two were seriously injured and escorted home by companions who refused to reveal names. The car rests at the river bottom.
ST. LOUIS July 4 Parker on the second ballot is claimed by his followers as they report Pennsylvania has joined in and Parker leads others. A strong McClellan boom in New York adds to the scene as Bryan and Hearst prepare to campaign. Delegates debate prolonging the balloting while unnamed candidates are discussed but no clear path emerges.
Alphonso Stefano of 22 Hoffman Place Watertown fired at Rocco Varanno after two beer bottles disappeared. Varanno lay dying at Relief Station as Stefano fled through the North End Italian colony. Stefano was captured after a wild pursuit by locals and Officer James A. Morgan. Varanno later recovered consciousness and struck Stefano during the arrest.
Lester W. Brock, a Tech freshman from Brighton, was severely burned when a tin tea kettle with chemicals exploded in a vacant Parsons Street lot. The blast hurled him three yards, tearing the barrel to pieces and badly injuring his face and right arm. His eyes may be permanently damaged.

At Point of Pines yesterday a planned head on collision of two locomotives triggered a riot with about 10 000 spectators. Engines wrecked, booths smashed, missiles flew, and police used clubs and pistols as crowds stormed the track and hotel. One infant rescued from mob danger. officers struggled to restrain the chaos.
