Navy accounts a dramatic engagement with German U boats at two separate points far from shore. A large force of submarines attacked on June 22 and again days later. The fleet opened with heavy fire, five torpedoes missed, and destroyers forced the attackers to withdraw.
The report says 28 people were killed in a race riot and 310 Negro homes were burned. Police and troops are accused of making little effort to stop the riot.
Eyewitness reports describe a white man luring a Black man to an alley and shooting him in the head as mobs form in East St Louis. National Guardsmen patrol the streets after days of race violence that has killed 28 and wounded 75 or more.
Washington on July 3 reported that selection of men for the National War Army will be made in Washington. The exact method remains secret until exemption cards are organized, likely by July 10. It is understood there will be draws from the millions of registration cards with drawn men summoned before local exemption boards.

A grief stricken mother who had just lost her baby allegedly took another woman's five month old Davis A Law found days later at the Dorchester home of Mrs Josephine M Blaine after being discovered outside a Roxbury department store. The missing infant was identified as Agnes Laws child of 67 Marcella street.
Mrs Blaine cared for the Law baby for 24 hours believing it hers after the child died at a hospital. Suspicions about size led to baby’s return to Mrs Law. Blaine is hospitalized in a nervous breakdown. police see it as a distressed attempt to heal a broken heart. No charges filed.
Brookline police probe weaknesses in nurse Harriet Varney alibi for the June 19 murder of Mrs. George H. Keyes. A letter received by Keyes at his Massachusetts avenue home warned that someone with knowledge would reveal Varney’s story and hinted at another witness.
One person is critically injured and four seriously hurt when a car carrying Boston to Worcester travelers struck a New Haven express at the South Sudbury crossing while slowing for Marlboro Station. John Lucey Jr of Worcester is in dangerous condition with head and limb injuries. Henry Wentzel Will Wentzel Ralph Cloutier and another North Grafton man are injured.
A threatened walkout by union ticket agents baggage men deck hands wharf men and crossing tenders employed by the Boston Revere Beach and Lynn railroad was averted after an adjustment reached last night between management and workers.
Conference at the State House yesterday and last night halted a planned midnight strike. The new agreement grants two main union demands: promotion of baggage masters to deckhands and job protections against transfers except in emergencies. Seniority ratings are addressed and a wage raise of 60 cents a day will be reconsidered before the State Board tomorrow at 10 am, with arbitration as a fallback if no accord is reached.
