Postoffice Expenses Debate on Mills Bill Headed to Conference

Washington July 8. Mr Blount of Georgia submitted the post office appropriation bill with Senate amendments and non-concurrence recommendations. A conference was ordered on several items including $800,000 for a more efficient mail service to South and Central America and the West Indies and a 2 cent per pound postage on seeds and bulbs. The House adjourned to meet Thursday and did not call up the tariff bill. The tariff debate featured Mr McKinley seeking higher duties on iron products and Mr Bayne defending tariff measures to aid American workers, while Mr Bland urged moving ahead with business. The session highlighted disputes over tariffs and labor impact, with extended debate and procedural motions. The House rose after a lengthy tariff discussion and adjourned to reconvene Thursday.
