Yachts Race Off Newport Endures Deadly Half Gale

In Newport Rhode Island July 2 a half gale wrecked 90 footers Columbia Reliance and Constitution. Sailor Carl B Olsen drowned after being swept from the bowsprit on the Columbia. Two others survived. Constitution lost its gaff and mainsail while Reliance suffered major hull denting but intact rigging. Newport races halted unfinished as crews searched for Olsen.

George of BALA and Blake Lead in Singles at American Henley

Ernest George of Boston A. A. won the single sculls at the first American Henley held on the Schuylkill River Philadelphia July 2. R. P. Blake of Union Boat Club Boston placed second with A. W. Pape of Dolphin B. C. San Francisco third. The school crews beat Philadelphia lads easily.

French and American revolver match results reported

Paris reports the Franco American revolver match results with French scores led by Captain Chauchat and Captain Mereaux while American marksmen show strong totals and claim victory despite French shooters facing a smaller target and shorter distance. Additional French scores from Lyons and other participants remain unreceived.

Boston police chase lead on Lamothe fugitive in city

Boston police pursue two lines to seize Lamothe the Lowell murderer believed hiding near the city. A key lead centers on Lamothe s intimate French friend living in or near Boston and possibly a former lodger at 11 Allen Street kept under tight guard by Sergeant Hennessey. A Winchester witness reports a man matching Lamothe s description with two missing fingers seen near Washington and Elm streets before vanishing toward the West End.
