New York, July 2. R G Dun Co reports the six months ending July 1 show 5510 failures, up from 4637 in 1883, with liabilities totaling 124 million versus 96 million. Average debt per failure rose to 38 thousand from 18 thousand, largely in speculative quarters. The agency says legitimate business suffers no serious harm and anticipates a better second half with profitable merchandise demand.
National Broadway Bank of New York sues Wm McCreery of Pittsburgh to recover 103000 on four 25000 notes. The action stems from the failure of Commodore Garrison and the Pittsburg Cleveland and Toledo railroad. Notes dated January and February, drawn in Youngstown Ohio, payable four months, endorsed by McCreery, W Anderson, and K Garrison.

New York July 2 Col Hain manager of the Manhattan Elevated Railroad reports counterfeit tickets passed on the line. Detectives arrest Wm H Pindar and John B Cole jailed after finding counterfeit and real tickets. August C Speth lithographer also arrested. Cole admits robbing about 14600 by cancelling tickets and repassing good ones. He names 20 plus agents and hints at further arrests and hidden latch keys. Rings within rings allegedly operated for years. Prisoners confined as investigations continue.
A postmortem examination was conducted on the body of Reverend C Meeks who died Tuesday night under distressing circumstances in Quincy. The inquest and authorities awaited further findings to determine the cause and any accompanying details of the death.
