Tragic Canoe Outing Ends With Drowning on Charles River

A Roslindale trio's afternoon outing ended in tragedy when Walter Hungerford 17 drowned after their canoe Iroquois capsized on seven feet of water in Boylston Cove near the Moseley float. Louis Hammond 17 and James Stackhouse 15 were rescued by Arthur Timmins and others as rescue efforts continued for twenty minutes.

Sentry Seizes Pistol Then Private Shoots Self

Burlington date July 1 Private James Eagan seized a revolver from a sentry at Fort Ethan Allen and fatally shot himself after scuffling with John Crowley who was on duty at the stables. Eagan, from Amsterdam New York, had served two years with a good record.

Jamaican rescuer saves 15-year-old from Charles River

Arthur Timmis of Jamaica Plain pulled 15-year old James Stackhouse from the Charles River at Dedham yesterday. A physician treated both Stackhouse and Hammond who had swallowed water and were exhausted. Dedham police took Mr Timmis after the rescue.
