Beamed Beef and Hog Inspection Law Receives Trial Run
Washington notes a fair test for the new beef and hog inspection law following Secretary Rusk and Dr Salmon's Chicago visit. Inspection of hog products begins June 22 in Chicago with a 600 hogs daily capacity, employing about thirty people at wages from 1000 to 1800 dollars for microscopists. Initial costs per animal run five to ten cents, with enforcement limited to Chicago unless tests prove successful and funding allows expansion. France and Germany may lift import restrictions by Oct 1, boosting exports if official inspection certificates accompany meat.

Governor’s limited power in state board appointments
The governor has no discretion in appointing members to the State Board of Arbitration and Conciliation. Under 1886 law, vacancies are filled via the board’s two members recommendation, with the governor obliged to send a name to the Council if a suitable candidate is proposed within thirty days. If the board cannot recommend within that period, the governor’s appointing power activates.
