At the Central Labor Union of New York meeting, a motion to invite Gen. Benjamin Butler as grand marshal or orator for the September parade and picnic sparked debate. Delegates split, some praising Butler as a labor representative, others branding him a politician and capitalist stockholder in mills at Fall River. The matter was laid on the table.
The July 1 race from New York to Stony Creek between Frederick Hughes's catamaran Jessie and Ezra Daggett's horse Boston ended with Jessie crossing the finish dock at 3:20 PM after passing New Haven at 2:30 PM. Neighbors and two former playmates witnessed the tragedy following their unhappy marriage and recent drinking problems. Separately, lawyer Charles W. Cass, 29, has disappeared after leaving his office with plans to return soon. Cass, president of Manchester Steel and Iron Works, Pittsburg, comes from a prominent family. his father runs a railroad. Police note neuralgia and a fall may have affected him. In lesser items, elderly Henry and Theresa Wegner attempted suicide. the steamship Nevada brought 680 Mormon converts to port, including Swedes, Danes, Welsh, English, and Norwegians.
James H. Cook, a West Street commission merchant's clerk, stole $200 from the safe, left New York for Dorchester, Mass., where he was found with his wife and children. He agreed to return without a requisition, but then refused. Detective O Conner is to bring him back, with requisition papers to be issued and forwarded.
An early morning Rochester and Pittsburg railroad collision at Rasselas 25 miles southeast of Radford Pennsylvania left six dead including the conductor and a brakeman and several others injured as the first coal train section separated and wrecked. a passenger car with 15 people was hit in a downhill break.
The Red House Observatory reports a telescopic sighting this morning of a vast sunspot group centered on the sun. The group spans about 50,000 miles in diameter and is visible to the naked eye. Observers note violent cyclonic action, electrical storms, and auroral activity accompanying the outbreak, with a brilliant aurora observed last night.
In New Haven on June 1 Mrs Mary A Lewis threw red pepper into the eyes of Mrs Nellie R Beale and Mrs Hattie M Wightman after learning her husband spoke with them on the street. Mrs Lewis was arrested and her husband posted bonds for her city court appearance the next morning.
A Pittsburg and Fort Wayne train collided with a street car at 40th Street crossing in the stock yards district. The crash at late night killed three people and wounded several others.

The Eastern Yacht Club held its annual spring regatta off Marblehead on Saturday.
