The signal service chart shows warm weather across the country with high barometer in the gulf and southwest. Cold air lingers in the maritime provinces while a low forms near Lake Superior. Tuesday may bring warmer conditions with possible rain or snow.
The New Bedford Standard outlines Crano's position for the coming campaign and notes strong statewide calls for his governor nomination. It states Crano would accept the nomination if offered, with friends ready to push his name while remaining opposed to a personal canvass. Dr Capen of Tufts College is being urged as a fifth district delegate to Chicago.
A Boston club secretary announces a special six member committee to confer with the Massachusetts Tariff Reform League regarding a June 24 communication. The meeting is set for Monday February 6 at 2 p.m. at the Home Market Club rooms, 56 Beepford Street.
A pamphlet titled Q Oppressive Tariff Taxation argues for tariff revenue only and features James Means addressing shoe factory workers. It argues the protective system is fallacious and includes a cover image of a poor worker burdened by tariff taxes while a protected manufacturer rides atop. In Duns Jan 80 Father McFadden of Gweedore Donegal was convicted for anti landlord and anti police meetings and sentenced to three months imprisonment. Father Kennedy and eight farmers face summons under the Grimes act for attending a suppressed league meeting at Meelin Cork. Eight more summonses issued for similar offences at Kanturk Cork. Five hundred bill processes and ejectment notices issued at Magherafelt Londonderry against Drapers Estate tenants.
The St James's Gazette cites St Petersburg advices that an army officer mortally wounded in the heart confessed to shooting himself to avoid killing the Czar. He claimed membership in a secret society that chose him to assassinate the Czar, with several hospital witnesses and two doctors briefly detained.
In Haute Saone elections M Mercier Republican defeated Conservative Marquiset by about seven thousand votes. The vote tally stood Mercier 40 000 Marquiset 27 000. Also French Cable Co appeals a ruling favoring Anglo American Cable Co over a failed agreement with the poor. Damascus consulate incident. Italy declines 1881 treaty and opens fresh terms with France.
A morning fire on Broadway New York gutted Nos 549 551 and 553 Broadway and nearby Mercer street casualties. Assistant Foreman Reilly died after being buried in debris as the blaze also damaged 116 Mercer street and other nearby properties. Losses listed include Stern Falk Co Max Kaempfer and others totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. Brooklyn and Brockton incidents noted with firefighting actions and local fatalities.
The socialist trial at Posen concluded with Slavinski receiving two years nine months in prison. Wilkowski and Konopinski were sentenced to two years six months, Merkowski and Janischewski to one year six months, and seven others to terms from nine to four months. Four defendants were acquitted.

He argued war drives demand for munitions, provisions, clothing, and medical stores, and neutrals must balance supplying both sides while limiting belligerent use of resources.
James Leonard and Cornelius Cronin were arrested last evening for breaking and entering the dwelling of Alfred McNear at 102 Decatur Street East Boston. They were caught while attempting to sell a large quantity of clothing stolen from the residence.

Professor Asa Gray of Harvard University died at his home in the Botanical Gardens at Cambridge last evening at 7:30. He had suffered paralysis for weeks, dying after rapid decline. His wife and physicians were present. Gray, born November 18 1810 in Paris New York, studied medicine before turning to botany with John Torrey. He served as botanist on the Wilkes expedition, declined Michigan chair, then became Fisher professor at Harvard in 1842 and later led Harvard herbarium. His work helped shift botany to a natural classification and he contributed to Flora of North America and numerous government expeditions. His herbarium exceeded 200,000 specimens.
A January 30 tremor in Newport and nearby cities shocked residents at 1:20 a.m. The quake, not a dynamite blast as rumor claimed, rattled Newport, Providence, New Bedford, and Fall River. Professor Monroe denies any dynamite discharge from the torpedo station.
