Resignation of Gov Stanley and Newbern Cavalry Action

A Newbern despatch says Gov Stanly sent resignation to Washington while President proclaims opposition. The army and Union supporters oppose a successor and back a Provisional Court. The 3d New York Cavalry and Amory’s brigade conducted a five day reconnaissance, clearing guerrillas and seizing stores in eastern North Carolina. Gen Foster hires Negroes for garrison duty despite Stanly’s objections.
