Money market and finance in Boston amid currency excess
In Boston on Thursday January 29, banks report abundant currency for first class borrowers with discount rates 6 to 8 percent. Banks eye loaned funds as excess currency sits idle, while notes bought below standard rates. Congress members from the West and South forecast inflationist views, debating currency volume and regional wealth shifts. Gold opened and closed higher, silver deposits recorded, and various stock, bond, and mining prices moved at the Boston Stock Board with gains and declines across insurers, railroads, and producers.

Calumet wrecked entering St Georges harbor in tow
The Calumet from Calcutta to Boston wrecked while entering St Georges harbor on the 7th in calm conditions after earlier attempts to tow her in. Tugs Clover and Spitfire failed to safely bring her in. Pumps kept water under control until noon, but she sank to her decks by daylight. Cargo about 100 tons landed. Captain Cheever deemed the accident unforeseen and not the fault of pilots or tug.
