Mrs. Carrie Nation begins a campaign to close saloons in Kansas by wrecking property and confronting the governor. The action draws ire and a promise of enforcement, signaling a hardline temperance push.
Mrs. Carrie Nation storms the Capitol in Topeka accusing Governor William B. Stanley of inaction on saloon closures. She also targets Attorney General Goddard County Attorney Nichols and Sheriff Porter, urging them to close saloons, then addresses the Legislature. The governor challenges her claims as she calls him a lawbreaker.
A papal cablegram and letter from Pope Leo XIII expressed joy and blessing for the 25th anniversary of the Young Men's Catholic Association of Boston. The celebration at Boston College Hall drew over 200 attendees including Cardinal Rampolla and papal delegate Archbishop Williams. Festivities featured music by the Boston Festival Orchestra and speeches on civic and religious duties.
A fire at a two family lodging house on Auburn street at 6 15 last night forced three people to escape with a fourth rescued by ladder crewman Fred Leary of Ladder 12. Mrs Rickenberg was saved as flames spread from No 57 to No 55 and Mr Ferguson was carried to safety after collapsing in smoke. Total damage about 1000 dollars.
Boston hosts Marian Titus now known as Marie Tiziano after operatic triumphs in Italy. Titus of New York sues for divorce following a pivotal letter admitting no future together and her move abroad to pursue her career. The couple married in 1804. Titus remained in New York as she left post debut in Boston and abroad.
Dora Harrington, 22, employed by Charles Hess on Beacon Street, was held up by a tall burly man on Beacon Street near the Common at about 8 pm. He grabbed her by the throat, threw her down, and stole her pocketbook containing two pennies before escaping. The victim suffered only fright, and described the assailant as 6 feet 9 inches tall and about 160 pounds.
The Lawrence Common Council ends its deadlock as Democrat W. B. Bartley and Republican Charles H. Choate agree to split the year in the president's chair. Bartley serves first half, Choate the second. committees to be equally divided. Nearly 800 ballots failed to produce a president earlier. A joint convention to elect city officials may be called for next Wednesday night.
Gales sweep Germany with hurricane like snow in Berlin and eastern coast. Leer reports tidal flooding while Bremen notes heavy seas pushing water up the Weser. At Frankfurt snow falls heavily and a freight train near Dresden derails badly. Laho and tributaries flood and threaten rail traffic as telex and cable links suffer delays.
