Gambetta Resigns as French Crisis Unfolds in Parliament

From London dated January 27 a Paris dispatch notes Gambetta's resignation follows a heated debate over a constitutional reform drive. The chamber sided with a scrutin de liste clause while the government opposed revising the constitution. Gambetta spoke eloquently denying dictatorial aims and left the chamber appearing cheerful yet defeated as crisis continues.
