At General Kuroki's headquarters on January 26 a heavy artillery duel raged to the west as a Russian force reportedly crossed the Hun River on the Japanese left. New Orleans January 26 The Picayune Panama special reports the cruiser Dixie ordered to San Domingo amid widespread street fighting. Five hundred U S Marines on Empire Hill are deemed necessary. Colonel Woods departs for Colon with his full force, leaving a small detachment to guard stores.
Ten steerage passengers died at sea on the Vaderland from congestion of the lungs and pneumonia after arriving from Antwerp. About 700 steerage passengers were not allowed to land and the ship was sent back to Quarantine as four departments investigate. The board will examine feeding, medical care, steerage air quality, sanitary conditions, and possible sale of food by ship employees.
