Rolf G. Adams, 21, of East Providence, on trial in Superior Court for the death of Miss Rose McKenna on Sept 2, remarked after arrest that he had been expecting police action for two or three days.
A speedy retrial was indicated for the cases of Godfrey L. Cabot Robert D. Weston and Hector M. Holmes charged with conspiring to steal papers from Daniel H. Coakley's law office. Less than ten minutes passed to seat a jury after the second session opened as Judge Franklin G. Fessen den presided and indictments were read by clerk John Campbell.
Vice-President elect Coolidge helped select a gown for Mrs. Coolidge at a leading New York shop. He chatted with the proprietor during the fitting, approving the choice with a nod and a grunt as Mrs. Coolidge made her selection and confirmed the purchase.
President Pessoa of Brazil assured the State Department of hearty concurrence with President Wilson's Armenia policy as a preliminary step to mediation. The Brazilian ambassador conveyed the message and said Brazil authorizes the State Department to announce its position. Brazil and Spain offered to assist Wilson in mediation.
Ulster Unionist leader Sir Edward Carson refused the offer of premiership of the new Ulster parliament in London citing age and lack of strength. He will chair the Ulster party in the imperial parliament for now and the job is expected to go to Sir James Craig who sits for Mid-Down and serves as parliamentary secretary to the admiralty.
Negotiations between Ambassadors Morris and Shidehara for the California question and Japanese rights in the United States have been successfully concluded. Approval by both governments is necessary for final settlement. Washington reports the talks conducted in January by the two ambassadors have reached a determination to define the rights of Japanese in the United States and settle the California issue.
Governments must approve the ambassadors' conclusions before any further action toward a settlement. The text indicates prerequisite government endorsements are required prior to advancing talks or agreements.
Mrs. Bessie Levine of 69 East Eighth Street South Boston was killed when she either fell or jumped in front of an Elevated train at the Essex Street station in the Washington Street tunnel. The incident occurred about 3 PM as witnesses disputed whether she fell or leaped, with nearly 100 people nearby. Her body lay unidentified until her husband Nathan Levine identified her at the South Mortuary, and she died after being taken to City Hospital.
Dublin report states an elderly farmer was found shot near his home at Bandon County Cork. A note pinned to his coat says he was shot after conviction by court martial on the night of January 22 for intending to give information to the enemy of republican troop movement.

Professor William Thompson Sedgwick of MIT, a leading educator in biology and public health, died suddenly at 282 Berkeley Street Back Bay after attending a dinner at the Women's City Club. He collapsed at his door about 11:30 p.m. Doctor Edwin A. Locke said death was due to natural causes.
Provincetown January 23 A pocketbook lost in the ocean between Highland Tight and Boston Light last October and washed ashore at Ocean Bluff near Marshfield was returned to its owner Bragelia Souza today. Found by beachcomber 8 S Wright it contained money and a motorboat license bearing Souza name and address prompting Provincetown police chief P R Kelley to reunite owner and possession.
Professor Sedgwick was born in West Hertford Connecticut on December 29 1855 to William and Anne Thomp son Barpour Sedgwick. He completed preparatory training before entering the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale.
Admiral Sims told 3500 attendees at Symphony Hall that Sinn Fein backed Germany during the war and forced naval diversions that left American sailors at risk. He urged Irish Americans to reject the Sinn Fein faction, saying it undermined allied efforts.
