A three masted schooner Helen Shafner of Halifax endured 53 hours at sea in freezing conditions. The crew, starving and frostbitten, was saved January 18 off the Georges by the fishing schooner Josie and Phoebe, which reached T wharf last night.
Captain Isaac A. Hopkins and five crewmen on the Helen Shafner were found frostbitten and near death as the Josie and Phoebe under Captain Lawrence Norris rescued them. Four men were semi conscious on deck while Captain Norris provided food medical aid and shelter. A cargo of northern pine kept the failing vessel afloat, delaying its sinking. the crew prayed and thanked God as they neared rescue. Continued on Page 2-Third Column.
The Schenk jury in Wheeling West Virginia was locked up for the night after reaching no verdict at 10 o clock. A crowd of hundreds waited in the courthouse corridors as deputies kept order. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Fred Maury called it a disagreement suggesting the jury might be split 11 to 1 for conviction.
