Several men once in the public eye for alleged financial misdeeds in New England have drawn sensational attention in recent years. The pattern involves large sums and repeated scrutiny by authorities, with ongoing legal and reputational consequences for those named.
At Cheswick Harwick mine of Allegheny Coal Company hundreds of miners lie dead after a catastrophic explosion. Adolph Gunia survived the initial collapse but remains semi conscious. engineer Selwyn Taylor is among the dead. Rescue attempts began by afternoon as officials report both cages destroyed and the town grieves in shock.
In Nashua New Hampshire January 25 John P Goggin treasurer of the Nashua Trust Company faces arrest for alleged embezzlement of about 100000. A mystery man linked to Goggin’s downfall is named in a coded message. Goggin admits stock market speculation drained bank funds but says he did not profit. He claims a Boston bank asset supported his stock purchases and was wiped out by bad bets.
A collision off Cape Cod at 8 30 Sunday night between the Ella Pressy from Stonington Maine to New London Connecticut and the Francis Hubert from New York to Portland Maine sinks the Pressy. Two seamen drown and two sailors are saved by the Hubert then taken by tug to Boston. The Hubert burns its 6000 dollar cargo of kerosene as it drifts to safety.
Chicago January 25 The coroner s jury after three weeks of fire evidence at the Iroquois Theatre tonight held Mayor Carter H Harrison part owner and manager Will J Davis George Williams building commissioner Edward Laughlin building inspector William Sallers theatre fireman James E Cummings stage carpenter William Mullen in charge of the light that caused the fire for grand jury action
William Jennings Bryan addressed Dartmouth College students in College Hall on The Value of an Ideal. He delivered a witty, anecdote filled lecture with little reference to politics, stressing ideals in all pursuits from law to medicine before finally touching on political ideals.
Former President Cleveland declined to comment on William J. Bryan’s assertion that no Palmer Buckner voter can be Democratic nominee. He smiled and said Bryan has got the stage, let him go it, and added that seems definite.
Early today Station 5 officers led by Sergeant Goff raided 67 Chandler Street and arrested two men for keeping the opium joint. A strong odor of burning opium and a finely fitted joint were found. Also taken into custody were Miss Carrie Johnson 26 Miss Elsie Barrett 21 Miss Mabel Carlisle 21 and Frank V Courtney.
Dr Henry V Mc Laughlin accuses Police Chief Corey and Lt George W Dearborn of unbecoming conduct over a call to ambulance for a sick patient. Charges filed with Board of Selectmen chairman James M Codman. Public hearing scheduled. both officers deny the physician's claims.
