Lawrence January report details James T Furber general manager of the Boston and Maine railroad gravely ill with pneumonia after attending a friend's funeral. At 65 he is described as a vigorous, brusque yet respected figure who helped consolidate multiple New England rail roads and shaped the Haymarket square union station plan.
New York on January 24 reports that at 8:30 PM Dr Fuller physician to Cyrus W Field stated the patient was resting more comfortably after treatment.
Early today a large fire engulfed the Broad street carrying shop of Thomas Stewart in Woburn center. The building and stock were destroyed, with only some leather rolls saved. Nearby Kelley and Wilson properties also burned, with total losses estimated at several thousand dollars though insurance coverage varied. A second alarm failed to reach due to a faulty box.
