Washington January 24 The National Woman's Suffrage Association filled the Senate reception room to present arguments for a sixteenth amendment or equivalent action. Isabella Beecher Hooker Alice Stone Blackwell Olympia Brown Annie Shaw spoke as Susan B Anthony introduced them. Anthony warned repeated appeals to Congress would continue for years to gain suffrage. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was elected president for 1889 with Susan B Anthony vice president and a revised constitution adopted to expand representation. The group reaffirmed its non partisan stance while seeking broad support.
President Cleveland hosted a state dinner for the diplomatic corps with Mme Romero wife of the Mexican minister and Mrs Cleveland escorted by the Italian minister. The guest list included numerous ambassadors and ministers from Austria Hungary Germany Japan China France Netherlands Turkey and more.
Colonel Green disclosed that Joseph A. Moore, a longtime Connecticut Mutual Life correspondent, embezzled about 400000 dollars. Moore concealed thefts through false loan payments and misrepresented borrowers while maintaining a trusted image. the loss does not threaten solvency or dividends. The incident marks the only major loss in the company’s 43 year history and prompts an Indianapolis inquiry.
A telegram from Stornoway confirms the derelict schooner W. L. White of Rockland Maine has, after ten months and ten days, ended a notable drift across the Atlantic. Samuel Rothschild, a Hartford hotel proprietor, arrived in New York last Saturday and vanished. On Wednesday his family received a trunk with his clothing and personal effects including a watch diamond and ring, the key attached. Police are trying to solve the mystery.
Newport New Hampshire January 24 The city council approved the horse railroad ordinance granting rails from the Middletown line along Broadway and Spring street to Morton Park with branches to the depot steamboat wharf and bathing beach The road will be built quickly and in operation before summer.
