Paris sortie repulsed with heavy French losses

An official Versailles despatch recounts a January sortie from Mont Valerien involving about forty French battalions and heavy artillery. Prussian fire was effective and the French suffered heavy losses while the Germans remained largely unscathed. A proposed armistice via Gen Trochu was rejected by the Prussian king. Local truces were authorized for wounded and dead.
