A New York theatrical company performance near Mechanics Building sparked a 4000 strong crowd riot. Police reserves intervened to protect ticket seller Julius Arkin from attackers. Arkin reported a $2000 robbery during the chaos.
A New York produced troupe faced a mob at Mechanics Hall as half the audience rose, pelting actors with objects and chasing them from the stage. Patrolman Higgins kept the peace until 18 officers arrived. Arkin was escorted to the station for protection.
Augusta Ga January 22 Philander C Knox and Frank H Hitchcock Mr Taft s choice for Secretary of State and Postmaster General have been asked to attend a Charleston conference Sunday The President elect continues to assemble cabinet material and will likely discuss the treasury ship and other matters at the meeting.
Mr Taft will depart Augusta at eight o clock tomorrow morning for Charleston after a stay marked by his praise of Augusta and his improved fitness from golf. He said a Panama Canal Commission official gave him advance information on issues likely to arise on the Isthmus and he approved a Congressional bill to formalize current Isthmian government machinery, including reducing the number of judges.
The Courthouse Commission awarded the Suffolk county courthouse enlargement contract to George A. Fuller Company of New York for 679,900, though underbids from Nesbit & Co. and Conners Bros. prompted a prior revocation by a Board of Approval led by the Governor, Mayor, and Chief Justice. Nesbit underbid by 13,000 and Conners by about 9,000, and both firms plan to protest to state and city officials.
Representative Hepburn of Iowa asserts the U S must build two more battleships amid wartime sentiment. He cites a history of American wars and claims a warlike spirit will drive the next generation to support naval expansion.

The suit, long delayed by the presidential campaign, was filed today and later withdrawn to keep the matter private. Mrs Leavitt is the daughter of William Jennings Bryan and the marriage faced Bryan’s opposition.
Pauline Cesik 24 lies dying at House of Providence Hospital after being refused marriage by Joseph Peila 28 who is held by police on charges of shooting. Peila came to her home with a companion and fired two shots one in the jaw and one near the heart as Cesik held a baby. both wounds deemed possibly fatal.
Reports from London January 23 say earthquake nervousness grips Malta as some predict the island will disappear on Wednesday. Seismographs in Smyrna show movement only there, while Malta lies on the same seismic axis.

Edward W. Layte shot himself in the Brighton back yard at 65 Braintree street in front of his sweetheart Miss Leontina Hopkins after a lover’s quarrel. Miss Hopkins swooned, begged him to stop, and cried over his body as Patrolman Merchant arrived. Elizabeth Creamer of 63 Braintree was also linked to the case. Layte worked at Thompson Norris box factory. Hopkins at a shirt waist firm. Layte had told a landlord he planned to visit Nova Scotia before moving to Miss Creamer’s home nearby.
A dinner in Augusta Georgia features President-elect Taft majorly startled when a live possum tied to a silver platter is unveiled before him. The animal snarls with bared teeth as Taft recounts the odd moment.
A large blaze roared through Princeton New Jersey starting in a terminal restaurant at 1 30 am. Strong winds threatened to engulf the town and nearby Pyne dormitory as students fought the flames. The town lay in darkness after gas pipes burst and power lines fell.
Report says the St. Louis express traveling about fifty miles an hour crashed into the earlier section between South Fork and Summerhill after leaving Philadelphia at 4 30 yesterday afternoon. The double header second section ploughed through the first, killing and injuring many aboard.
Immediately after the wreck calls went out for all available physicians at both this place and Altoona. In under an hour about 50 doctors were en route to the scene. Five bodies were recovered from demolished cars and many injuries were rescued from the debris as officials restricted reporter access at the depot.
