Harvard President Attacked at Worcester Holy Cross Banquet

Dr. Francis J. Barnes of Cambridge accused President Eliot of Harvard of liberalism masking bigotry and leading a movement belittling Jesuit work during the Worcester County Holy Cross Alumni banquet at the Bay State House. Other speakers included Rt Rev Mer Conaty and Holy Cross leaders.

Eight rescuers save boys from Charles River ice

In Waltham on January 22 two 11 year olds Herbert Glancy and William Fraser fell through rotten ice on the Charles River. James Scanlon risked the flood to reach Glancy as more rescuers entered the water, five men sank before help arrived, and plank and rope aids saved all survivors. Glancy was pulled unconscious and revived after medical care.

Helgoland wreck recovery hindered by storm in Newfoundland

Reports from St John s Newfoundland say rescue boats cannot reach coves of St Mary s Bay to recover bodies of Helgoland victims as tempestuous seas persist. The French cable ship Francois Arago returned due to heavy seas preventing cable repairs on the Grand Banks.

Despatch from Spearman's Camp on Hart's Brigade casualties

War office bulletin from General Buller reports General Hart's Brigade casualties from yesterday's fighting at Spearman's Camp. It lists killed Captain Ryall and five men, wounded officers Second Lieutenant Andrews Captain MacLaughlin Lieutenant Barlow and 75 men, and eight missing. Further details to follow.

Dundonald Reported In Ladysmith With 1600 Men

A Pietermaritzburg source claims Lord Dundonald's flying column entered Ladysmith with 1600 troops, though no corroboration exists. British progress on the Tugela is slow and fierce fighting continues as Boers defend strong positions.
