Earthquake Tears Through Peloponnesus Destroying Villages

A strong quake struck the Peloponnesus at 9 30 am injuring several and destroying two villages near Philatra in Messenia. Kyparissia and Stase were nearly wiped out. Navarino and Galamata also suffered damage while Zante reported tremors but no casualties. Residents camp in the suburbs as authorities supply tents and relief.

Port Victor Brings 138 Sick Soldiers to Norfolk

The United States transport Port Victor arrived at Old Point with 138 Porto Rico sick aboard. Quarantine officials were unavailable, delaying landing. The plan is to land in the morning and move the men to Joshua Simpson general hospital before continuing to New York. The Chester, refitting at Newport News, passed the capes today.

Funeral of Captain George A Walker Held at Emmanuel Church

A large crowd attended the East Roxbury funeral for Police Captain George A Walker with Masonic rites. The service featured Tremont Male Quartet, floral tributes from Police ranks and Masonic bodies, and a forty-officer escort from multiple stations.

Funeral of John Reed Whipple Clergy and Family Attend

The funeral for John Reed Whipple, son of J R Whipple of Young's Hotel Parker House and the Touraine, was held at 266 Commonwealth Avenue yesterday at 12 30. Rev Leighton Parks officiated at a residence Episcopal service with male quartet music. Large crowds viewed the casket from 11 am until the service. No pallbearers. burial followed at Mt Auburn in a simple ceremony with relatives and intimate friends.

Desperate struggle ends with burglar captured in West Somerville

In West Somerville at the Wade home on Elm Street a 16 year old burglar, Ernest C Darling, shot by a resident, was captured after a hand to hand struggle. Wade and his brother held the burglar until police arrived. Darling has a lengthy criminal record and may face a life term. Wade sustained a singed mustache and a bullet wound to his arm but is not seriously hurt.

A mass meeting at the Academy of Music in New York protested imperialism and entangling alliances. Bourke Cochran and Samuel Gompers attacked expansion, with letters from Cleveland and Bryan read aloud.
