Glosing epitaph on fame and hollow monuments

The verse questions a glittering epitaph that mocks the living with a phony fame. It likens grand monuments to empty columns, raised to hold a roof now gone, and says they merely bear idle stone shafts that tell an endless lie and deride any passer-by.
